Which flights are eligible for compensation?
According to the EU regulation on air passenger rights, you are entitled to compensation if your flight arrives at its final destination more than three hours late. The amount of compensation depends on the distance of the flight and not the price of the ticket and can be claimed up to 3, 5, and 6 years in Germany, France, and the UK, respectively. However, we must take two conditions into account:
- The plane must depart from an airport in the European Union….
- The flight can be operated by any airline (French, European or international).
- or land at an airport in the European Union
- The flight must be operated by an airline headquartered in the EU.
In which cases is there a right to compensation?
Any flight that arrives at its destination with a delay of at least 3 hours, is canceled less than 14 days before arrival or is denied boarding is entitled to compensation, provided that the causes of the unforeseen event are attributable to the airline and fall within the scope of EU regulations. In exceptional circumstances, the airline is exempt from paying compensation.
The flight must have taken off or landed in a European country; in the latter case, the airline’s registered office must also be in an EU member state. The amount of compensation does not depend on the price of the ticket or the reason for the trip, and the claims apply to flights that are no more than 3, 5, and 6 years ago in Germany, France, and the UK, respectively. Important: Do not let your airline excuse you! Hotel or meal vouchers or gift vouchers do not release the airline from paying your compensation.
In these cases, it is possible to claim compensation:
- Delays: Your flight has arrived at its destination more than 3 hours late.
- Cancellations: You were informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before departure.
- Overbooking: The airline overbooks your flight and you can no longer find a seat on board.
- Missed connecting flight: You miss your connecting flight and reach your final destination with a delay of 3 hours or more.

Strike at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport
Strikes are one of the main reasons for flight delays or cancelations in France. In the event of a strike that is beyond the airline’s control – such as a work stoppage by airport employees, security staff or air traffic controllers – passengers are generally not entitled to compensation under the European Passenger Rights Regulation if the airlines re-route the passengers as soon as possible. However, even in such cases, airlines are obliged to organize replacement transport for their passengers without delay. If the fastest possible transport is only possible after the end of the strike, air travelers may still be entitled to compensation. Their rights can be easily enforced with the help of air passenger rights portals.
If customers have to stay at the airport because of the strike, the airline must pay for costs such as accommodation and meals. However, if it is a strike that is inherent to the airline, it could be assumed that it is able to take appropriate measures to avoid flight disruptions. Therefore, the payment of compensation could be due, unless the airline can prove that all necessary measures were taken and the disruptions could not be avoided. In any case, you can request an alternative means of transportation to your destination as well as snacks and drinks. In the case of an organized trip, it is best to contact your travel agency directly to find an alternative solution.
What are my passenger rights if my flight is canceled due to a strike at Paris (Charles de Gaulle) Airport?
If your flight is due to depart from Paris (Charles de Gaulle) Airport and there is a strike at the airport in question, first check whether your flight is affected by the cancelations due to the strike. In accordance with the EU Passenger Rights Regulation, you are entitled to alternative transportation or a refund of the ticket price. Contact your airline for more information about replacement transportation, rebooking or ticket refunds, as well as local services such as meals and, if necessary, accommodation and transportation to the hotel.
Can I receive flight compensation if my flight at Paris (Charles de Gaulle) Airport is delayed or canceled due to a strike?
A flight cancelation or a significant delay of more than three hours due to a strike is often considered an extraordinary circumstance, provided the strike is not the fault of the airline or airline staff. There is no entitlement to compensation in exceptional circumstances. Nevertheless, passengers should check their rights to basic care and catering services at Paris (Charles de Gaulle) airport. This includes meals, refreshments and, if necessary, accommodation, depending on the length of the delay and the flight route.
