About Tampa International Airport
Tampa International Airport is one of the best, biggest, and busiest public airports in the United States. Owned and managed by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, it is located approximately 10 kilometres west of downtown Tampa. There are a number of stunning attractions in the area surrounding the airport, such as the African Art Gallery, Tampa Museum Art, Adventure Island, and the Florida Aquarium.
Several major airlines fly through Tampa, Florida. Some of these include Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines and many more. During peak season the airport sees up to 90 flights per day travelling to 75 non-stop destinations. The most popular of these destinations are Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), New York (JFK) and Philadelphia (PHL), but the airport also offers international service to Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, China, France, India and the Caribbean among others.
The airport has a record of handling an average of 16.7 million passengers per year. By the end of 2013, the airport handled over 16,900,000 passengers, making it the 31st busiest airport in the United States. To make passengers more comfortable, the airport offers a cell phone waiting lot with flight information, touch screen information kiosks, free wireless Internet access, outdoor smoking areas, and passenger paging. In addition, there are restaurants and bars found inside the landside terminal and airsides. The airport offers more than 19,000 parking spaces split between the Economy Parking Garage, Long Term, Parking Garage, and the Short Term Parking Garage. All these parking areas are very spacious and open 24 hours a day. Disabled parking is also available to ensure the comfort of all passengers.
A Brief History
Before becoming the world-class facility that people know today, the airport has passed through a number of historical changes and events. During the Second World War, the airfield used to be known as Drew Field Municipal Airport and was used by the United States Army Air Corps for training and other military operations. After the war came to an end, the airfield was handed over to the city of Tampa in 1945. In 1952, it was taken by the Hillsborough County Aviation which managed to renovate and improve it. Today, the airport continues to host numerous American, European, and Asian airlines on a daily basis.
